France has developed a fully implantable, autoregulated artificial heart—the CARMAT Aeson—engineered with aerospace sensors to mimic the natural rhythm and adaptability of a living human heart. While millions of people suffer from severe biventricular heart failure, only a few thousand donor hearts become available globally each year, leaving a critical shortage for patients awaiting a transplant. Created through a collaboration between renowned cardiac surgeon Professor Alain Carpentier and European aerospace engineers at Matra Defense (Airbus Group), the Aeson device replicates the two-ventricle architecture of a real heart. To solve the historic problem of blood clots caused by synthetic plastics and metals, every internal surface that contacts blood is lined with biocompatible bovine pericardial tissue, substantially reducing the need for heavy blood thinners. Inside the titanium shell, dual motorized micro-pumps drive hydraulic fluid against flexible membranes to create a natural, pulsatile heartbeat. Ten embedded sensors—including pressure transducers and accelerometers—detect when a patient stands up, walks, or rests, automatically adjusting cardiac output between 2 and 9 liters per minute.
