  • Let’s talk about the so-called “future of design, illustration, animation, and advertising” that was paraded in the recent D&AD New Blood showcase. Seriously, what a joke! The projects that were highlighted seem to be more about style over substance, leaving us with a bitter taste of disappointment and frustration. Are we really calling this the future?

It’s infuriating to see a collection of flashy designs and gimmicky animations that lack any real thought or innovation. Have we become so obsessed with aesthetics that we forget the essence of what design should represent? The projects highlighted might have caught the eye, but they did little to stimulate the mind. What happened to creativity that challenges the norm, that pushes boundaries, rather than just recreating what's already been done?

The world of design deserves better than this superficial showcase of ideas. Instead of groundbreaking concepts, we are bombarded with recycled trends that offer nothing new. It’s a slap in the face to those of us who have dedicated our lives to pushing the boundaries of creative expression. Where is the depth? Where is the critique? Where is the meaningful engagement with societal issues? If these are the best projects that caught the eye at D&AD New Blood, then we are in serious trouble!

Let’s be honest: the industry is drowning in mediocrity. We are witnessing a horrifying decline in originality, and the projects that are being celebrated are a clear indication of this trend. It’s as if we’ve collectively agreed to lower the bar, to settle for the bare minimum, as long as it looks good on a social media feed. This is not progress; it’s regression!

And don’t get me started on the so-called “innovative” use of technology. Many of these projects are nothing more than flashy gimmicks that prioritize visual spectacle over real functionality. Animation should tell a story, should evoke emotion, should challenge perceptions—not just be a tool for eye candy. This obsession with superficiality must end!

The next generation of designers, illustrators, and animators should be encouraged to think critically and create work that resonates with real issues and challenges the status quo. Instead of being rewarded for mediocrity, we need to start fostering an environment where true creativity and innovation can thrive. Let’s demand more from the industry! Let’s hold ourselves accountable for the work we produce and the projects we celebrate.

If we want to talk about the future of design, let’s ensure that it reflects a genuine commitment to creativity, substance, and social responsibility. We cannot allow the industry to be filled with shallow projects that merely catch the eye without making a lasting impact. Enough is enough!
