The Chuditch (Dasyurus geoffroii), also known as the Western quoll, is a small but powerful carnivorous marsupial native to Australia. Once widespread, it is now a rare and elusive species, surviving mainly in protected and recovering habitats.

📍 Habitat & Range

The Chuditch is found in parts of southwestern Australia, especially forested areas, woodlands, and shrublands. It prefers dense cover for shelter and hollow logs or burrows for nesting.

🍃 Diet & Hunting

This marsupial is an opportunistic predator. It feeds on insects, small mammals, reptiles, birds, and sometimes carrion. With sharp teeth and strong jaws, it is a skilled nocturnal hunter, active mostly at night.

💞 Reproduction & Behavior

Breeding occurs once a year. Males compete for access to females, and mating can be intense but short during the breeding season. After mating, males typically do not participate in raising young. Females carry and nurse the developing joeys in a pouch until they are more independent.

⚠️ Conservation Status

The Chuditch is currently listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. Its population declined sharply due to habitat loss, introduced predators like foxes and cats, and human activity.

Conservation programs, habitat restoration, and predator control efforts in Australia have helped slow its decline and support population recovery in some regions.
