A Day in San Gimignano: Tuscany’s Medieval Skyline
Towns are postcard towns; there are towns which are like you've just read on a postcard, and there are towns like San Gimignano, which are as though you have just read the story yourself. The initial view of its popular towers protruding on the Tuscan hills is nearly untrue as though somebody created a middle ages fantasy and abandoned it standing to us to stroll around.
One of the things to do here is not to cross off any places but to sink into a slower pace, to have stone pavements and piazzas in the sun leading you down.
The morning starts with the light rustle of the Piazza della Cisterna, the centre of the town and where life still congregates, as they used to do many years before cameras and travel guides.
You are sitting, enjoying your cappuccino when you observe locals meeting, the tourists attempting to find the best spot to take the ideal picture and the shopkeepers putting down trays of the newly baked cantucci. It is the type of square where the time is long because the town is beckoning you to take your time as opposed to rushing.
Note: Before travelling, always check Meet And Greet At Stansted and book according to your needs.
As you stroll the dark lanes, the towers would walk behind you. When used as a sign of the affluence and competition amongst noble families, they now cast dark shade down alleys in the afternoon sunshine. The high viewpoint that can be enjoyed by climbing the tallest of them, Torre Grossa, is worth every step.
Before noon, fresh pasta and truffles can be smelled in the streets. Locating a small trattoria to have lunch is easy; San Gimignano is another place that is replete with such trattorias and the food that they serve is cooked by a grandmother.
A bowl of pappardelle and wild boar ragu is never forgotten not only because of the taste, but also because it is more or less anytime during the afternoon. It is best to have it because of the serenity of the afternoon.
