[Japanski znanstvenici otkrili novo stanje vode] U otkriću koje mijenja naše shvaćanje naizgled obične tvari, japanski znanstvenici otkrili su da se voda može istodobno ponašati, i kao tekućina, i kao krutina kada je zatvorena u nanoskopskim prostorima. U običnom ledu molekule vode su nepomične, dok se u tekućoj vodi slobodno kreću, stvarajući i prekidajući vodikove veze. No, znanstvenici s Tokijskog sveučilišta za znanost sada su potvrdili postojanje stanja "predtališta", u kojem se oba ponašanja događaju istodobno. U stanju predtališta počinje se topiti voda čije molekule još nisu potpuno povezane vodikovim vezama, i to prije nego što se sama struktura leda počne topiti pri zagrijavanju. To zapravo predstavlja novu fazu vode u kojoj zamrznuti slojevi H₂O koegzistiraju s polagano pokretnim H₂O, objasnio je Makoto Tadokoro, kemičar s Tokijskog sveučilišta za znanost, u članku objavljenom na stranicama tog sveučilišta. Kako bi promatrali to teško dostupno stanje, tim je koristio takozvanu "tešku vodu" (D₂O), u kojoj su atomi vodika zamijenjeni deuterijem, odnosno oblikom vodika koji u svojoj jezgri ima i dodatni neutron.
