U običnom ledu molekule vode su nepomične, dok se u tekućoj vodi slobodno kreću, stvarajući i prekidajući vodikove veze. No, znanstvenici s Tokijskog sveučilišta za znanost sada su potvrdili postojanje stanja "predtališta", u kojem se oba ponašanja događaju istodobno. U stanju predtališta počinje se topiti voda čije molekule još nisu potpuno povezane vodikovim vezama, i to prije nego što se sama struktura leda počne topiti pri zagrijavanju. To zapravo predstavlja novu fazu vode u kojoj zamrznuti slojevi H₂O koegzistiraju s polagano pokretnim H₂O, objasnio je Makoto Tadokoro, kemičar s Tokijskog sveučilišta za znanost, u članku objavljenom na stranicama tog sveučilišta. Kako bi promatrali to teško dostupno stanje, tim je koristio takozvanu "tešku vodu" (D₂O), u kojoj su atomi vodika zamijenjeni deuterijem, odnosno oblikom vodika koji u svojoj jezgri ima i dodatni neutron. Zamrznuli su je unutar kristala u obliku šipki s hidrofilnim kanalima širokim svega 1,6 nanometara, zatim je postupno zagrijavali i pratili promjene pomoću NMR spektroskopije deuterija u krutom stanju (osjetljivih instrumenata koji mogu pratiti gibanje molekula). Njihovo istraživanje objavljeno je u časopisu Journal of the American Chemical Society. Proces je otkrio trostruku molekularnu strukturu. Tadokoro je dodao da stvaranjem novih mrežastih struktura leda može biti moguće pohranjivati energetske plinove poput vodika i metana te razviti materijale na bazi vode poput umjetnih plinskih hidrata. Plinski hidrati su krute tvari koje nastaju kada se molekule plina (poput metana ili vodika) "zarobe" unutar mreže molekula vode pri niskim temperaturama i visokom tlaku.
